Congratulations on the Shenzhou-12 crewed mission

On 17 June 2021, three Chinese astronauts launched aboard Shenzhou-12 and became the first crew to enter the Tianhe core module. The flight opened the crewed phase of China’s space-station programme. GEODOM joined in congratulating the crew on this milestone.

International congratulations

Roscosmos congratulated its Chinese counterparts and highlighted the progress of the crewed programme, as well as cooperation on an international lunar research station. NASA Administrator Bill Nelson welcomed the launch and looked forward to the scientific discoveries that would follow. The European Space Agency and the Brazilian Space Agency also offered congratulations and good wishes.

Michel Tognini, former head of the European Astronaut Centre, described the significance of a long-term orbital station for regular crewed missions, spacewalks, experiments and future exploration. He also discussed the history of exchanges and joint astronaut training between Europe and China.

Perspectives from the scientific community

Brazilian astrophysicist Larissa Santos described the period as a golden age of space exploration. Daniela Fernández of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile highlighted the importance of the first crew sent to China’s own station and the work the three astronauts would undertake.

University of Chile astronomer César Fuentes called the mission a milestone and discussed how experiments and the ability to deliver larger equipment could support future space programmes, communications and transport technologies. He also saw new opportunities for international scientific cooperation.

Jonti Horner of the University of Southern Queensland reflected on the pace of China’s programme, noting both the Shenzhou-12 launch and the recent arrival of the Zhurong rover on Mars. The article closed by celebrating the successful flight.
